Quartz glass - A Pure Material With Good Transmission Properties

Feb. 24, 2022

Jinzhou Shengtang Quartz Glass Co., Ltd., is able to provide custom quartz glass for wide range of industries. We offer natural quartz, synthetic quartz and satin quartz.

The quartz glass is used in many industrial environments. Due to quartz's unique purity, good light transmission and high temperature resistance, it is used in everything from UV purification of water to fiber optic cables and sight glasses in industry and science. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact us.

What is quartz glass?

Glass made from quartz - this is a durable crystalline material composed of silicon and oxygen atoms (silica). Quartz and feldspar are the most common minerals found in the earth's crust. However, while quartz is a crystalline material, quartz glass is not. When a crystal is molded into a glass, it transforms into an amorphous (non-crystalline) form.

Quartz is one of the most useful and valuable materials in science and industry. The low coefficient of thermal expansion is one of the properties that makes quartz solutions particularly attractive. Due to the extremely high heat resistance of quartz, this glass is ideally suited for use as a sight glass in high temperature environments.

The glass is made from quartz sand, which offers unparalleled chemical purity compared to other similar materials. Chemical purity is critical in several high-tech industries, which makes this glass type valuable for companies that need the best materials for light transmission.

 Quartz Glass Material Properties

Quartz glass has many wonderful properties: the glass can withstand temperatures up to 1600 °C and has high transmittance from the UV range (ultraviolet) to the IR range (infrared). The glass can be used as plates as well as glass tubes and rods. Glass made from quartz cannot be tempered because it has an extremely low coefficient of expansion and is therefore resistant to high temperature differences.

Quartz can be divided into three main types.
► fused quartz
► synthetic quartz
► Fused quartz satin

Fused quartz is natural quartz, made from molds containing more than 99% quartz sand, which melts at very high temperatures. Fused quartz is the most widely used type of glass and is therefore also referred to as common or natural quartz glass.
As the name implies, synthetic quartz is a "synthetic" glass. The glass has the same properties as natural (fused quartz). It is even better in several practical ways. Glass made from synthetic quartz has unparalleled purity and better light transmission at the lower end of the UV spectrum.
Fused silica satin is also called satin quartz because the glass is not clear but matte. Satin quartz is mainly available in the form of tubes.

Facts about Quartz Glass Material Properties

►Glass can withstand temperatures up to 1600 °C
►High transmittance of light from the ultraviolet range (UV) to the infrared range (IR)
►Quartz solutions can be delivered both as sheets and as glass tubes and rods
►Can be made in matte and transparent qualities and finishes

Shengtang Quartz Glass offers natural quartz glass material properties

We are the stock leader for 1-5 mm thick sheets as well as some glass tubes and rods. Sheets thicker than 5 mm are custom made as these sheets have to be cut from blocks to the required thickness and after cutting the surface will be matt and therefore subsequently need to be polished to obtain a completely clear surface.

Synthetic Quartz
Due to the price of the raw material solution in synthetic quartz is custom made. Longer lead times are expected. However, we have some tubes in stock.

Satin Quartz
We are the stock leader for selected size tubes.
We can also process quartz as needed for.
►Shaping, drilling and notching
►Brushed edges
►Sandblasting
►UV activated gluing
►painting
►Screen printing
►Bending- It is possible to bend quartz glass, but it requires very high temperatures and is a complex process.

Quartz cannot be heat tempered because it can resist high temperature differences. The glass also cannot be chemically tempered because it does not contain enough sodium.

Quartz glass - A Pure Material With Good Transmission Properties

A very valuable property of quartz glass is the material's ability to transmit light. Compared to other types of glass, quartz allows a much wider spectrum to pass through. This makes the glass ideal for processes that use ultraviolet light. This could be, for example, UV-activated gluing/UV bonding or sterilization processes where light sources must be protected. For these purposes - and many more - we Jinzhou Shengtang manufacture products from quartz glass in the size and quantity you need. if you still have any questions on Quartz Glass Material Properties, feel free to contact us to get more information!
